It’s because English is such an odd language. There are rules, such as ” i before e, except after c”, but the exceptions far outnumber the rules! And letters that can sound 14 thousand different ways! Give me Spanish, where each letter has one sound and only one sound, and the accent is on the last syllable unless the word ends in ‘n’ or ‘s’, in which case it’s on the next-to-last syllable. Simple. I’m 70 years old and STILL haven’t mastered the English language!
