Not an uplifting song, but one that inspires a sense of hope. “Everybody Hurts” by R.E.M. came out in 1992. It works as a vehicle for when you’re down and suffering, when the shit’s gone wrong, and you’ve hit the bottom, and you’re ready to start climbing back up again.
Did you know that Paul Anka made a swing version of this song? It was a good, inventive version.

No, I didn’t, so I had to look it up and listen. Now I’m listening to Paul Anka’s swing version of “Eye of the Tiger”. He sounds weirdly like a young Frank Sinatra, but they’re interesting interpretations. Reminds me, too, of Johnny Cash’s late work, when he covered rock music with his inimitable style.
