My own approach to writing is a lot like that: I can’t start with no idea whatsoever, but I can’t work from a detailed plot outline and a ‘character questionaire’ with the protagonist’s entire life history, either. Some of my fictional people end up changing species from what I originally thought they were, and theinevitable backstory revisions are generally an accepted — ’cause they have no choice — part of being cast as a character in one of my stories.

That’s me, too, Thomas, and I enjoy it. Species changes, sex, ethnicity…I take it as it arrives.
