Tuesday’s Wandering Thought

Most of us view ourselves as younger than we are. Just a trick of psychology. I can see, then, how disturbing using a cane or walker because you’re now elderly and need it can severely disrupt your self-image.

  1. Hello Michael. I was 33 when I lost the ability to walk the first time. I am 60 this year. My orthopedic doctor / surgeon told me I would need a cane or other assistance the rest of my life. I decided then that if I was going to need those things, I would have style about it. I have about 20 canes and each one is different somehow. My favorite one right now has a Viking axe head with runes etched in it. I have skull ones and orbs held by claws for Halloween / October, I have many different animal head canes, and a few with different kinds of dragons. My canes always get attention, and often adults and children will ask to examine them. Short funny story. Ron sometimes needs a cane now as he has MS. He just borrows one of mine. Recently he used one of my dragon canes to go to Walmart. He left it in the cart, was on the other side of the aisle with his back to the cart checking something out. When he turned back, the cane was gone. In a few short minutes someone came by him, seen it, liked it so much they just stole it. He was upset. I told him if someone needed it that bad that they would risk getting caught stealing it, they needed it more than we did. Hugs

    1. I admire your attitude, Scottie. Perpetually upbeat, from this angle. Good to have style to offset circumstance, even if that does so just a small amount. You inspire me with your approach. I hope I can emulate it. Take care, mon ami. Hugs ‘n cheers
