The Encounter

Midnight.

I turn on the master bath lights and see a large spider in one of the porcelain sinks.

Finding a tube of cosmetics, I tried to give them a lift up and out.

The spider raced around in a slipping, sliding frenzy to escape the tube. “I’m trying to help you,” I reassured it.

Withdrawing, I found a small cloth and shaped a ramp in the sink. Recognizing the opening, the spider used it to climb up and out. Then it disappeared without even a backward glance or wave.

I wonder what she’ll tell others about her encounter with a human.

  1. We haven’t seen any spiders in our new (to us) home, but where I lived up north we had plenty of insect and arachnid visitors. My wife was brought up to see them all as unworthy of life. I brought myself up to believe all living things are my siblings — they can live where they choose, the world belonged to them before it belonged to us.
It was either separate or compromise.
I now have a “bug glass.” Depending 9n where they are, floor, wall, or ceiling, I cover them with my bug glass, slide a sheet of printer paper under the glass to trap them inside, then carry them outside and release them to build a life somewhere else. Gail acts as my 911 caller. This works quite well.
Glad to hear you do not kill spiders, MS. This impresses me.

    1. Yes, we embrace the right of everything else to exist, and that includes spiders, roaches, and ants. I’ve had many relocation episodes with a glass and a piece of paper. Those efforts are reserved for the black widows that live around here. I’ve shifted eight of them in the twenty years of life here. Left the ones in the garage, front porch, and back patio alone. Glad to hear you also don’t kill spiders. Cheers

      1. I don’t kill mosquitoes either. My dilemma is that driving a car kills many things, and my life requires highway travel. Did you ever see the commercial of rhe Dalai Lama, driving down a highway darting from one side to another to avoid bugs? I would do that if I knew how.
Out of the blue, what is your take on bacteria, and viruses? I’ll tell you mine later, because I do not want to influence anything you might have to say. Thanks.

  2. rg, I have considered the impact of travel and how our choices affect other living creatures. Never saw that commercial, though. My basic philosophy has always been live and let live, etc., but I never considered viruses and bacteria. Sorry. One of those things that might be answered when I die. I always hope to learn greater secrets and truths after dying.

Hope I didn’t disappoint you. Please let me know your take. Cheers, M
