Thursday’s Wandering Thoughts

I realized after a conversation last night that I was taught to hold the door for others — man, woman, child, animal; say please and thank you; always put the toilet seat down; and clean up after yourself.

I think about them as I do them, and why I do them. What I like best is that others usually thank me for holding the door, and others often hold the door for me. That’s the kind of place I’d like us to be. At least it’s a start. Then we can build off that.

  1. Hi. Michael I also do those things. I was not taught to, but I do it because I like people and I enjoy being nice to others. I find a little kindness goes a long way in brightening the day of others. I have noticed that service people being given a hard time have trouble not bringing that unpleasantness with them for a while, but the opposite is true. They tend to brighten at kindness and complements, and that they also carry with them for a while. To me, it is simple courtesy, and it really is what makes the world better.

Short story. The pharmacy Ron and I use is understaffed and over worked. The workers are wonderful people but they get treated in ways that stun me and Ron when we see it. People feel free to abuse them and take their frustrations out on them. It takes a toll on them. But Ron and I are golden there, they go out of their way to help us. Why because when we saw them being abused and it was our turn, we asked them to relax and slow handle our stuff, use us to take a break and reset from the abuse. We learned about them, we showed them kindness, patience when they were swamped, we always treated them with respect and as fellow human people. We always told them they were working harder than we were, so don’t rush. They share photos of family with us, they tell us of their worlds. It is grand. The other day I went to the counter and when someone yelled be right with you, I called out “It is OK you’re working harder than me, take your time”. The tech came around the corner smiling saying “I heard the voice and knew who it was and already it brightened my day”. That is grand. Hugs. Scottie
