Thursday’s Theme Music

“Sunshine,” my heart shouted. “Blue skies! Woo hoo!”

“I see some fog rolling in over the mountains,” my brain replied.

“Shut up,” my heart snapped. “You’re always trying to bring me down with your facts. Just let me enjoy the sunshine.”

“They say snow is on the way,” my brain observed.

So began Thursday, December 9, 2021, with a little heart and brain give and take. At 7:28 AM, the sun cracked the sky and sunshine spilled through the valley. The sun fest will continue until 4:39 PM. It’s 31 degrees F outside right now, and sunny, as my heart noted. My brain is right, though, snow levels are forecast to drop to 2000 feet and flurries are expected throughout the day. Clouds are marshalling over the ranges outside my western windows as I type.

I have “Crumblin’ Down” by John Cougar Mellencamp (1983) playing in the morning mental music stream. A general sense of change inspired the song’s entry into the brain’s holding pattern. Shifts are going on; walls are tumbling down, which led to crumbling down, which beget — well, you get it.

Stay positive, test negative, wear a mask as needed, and get the jabs when you can. Here’s the music. Where’s my coffee? I must’ve been perambulating about with the cup in hand. Now I’m on a search and drink mission. Cheers

Wednesday’s Theme Music

Fozzley and mute, sliverly gray, the weather’s not much different this day. Temp stuck on 41 F, going neither up nor down with any interest. Sun is shining, it’s that paste up there, but its intent and impact is nada to fear.

Today is Wednesday, December 8, 2021, a sign that the year is less than four weeks from done. Sunglow came with a thin shiver this morn, 7:27 AM, to cite the time, but the difference in weather could be paid with one thin dime. Sunset will be at 4:39, ending the daytime, floating us to night.

Bust A Move” by Young MC from 1989 is the morning mental music stream squatter. That song was a constant in clubs and radio play back 89/90. It’s catchy with a sweet beat that makes it an inviting dance song. Bust a move as an expression has more meanings than the love and sex alluded to in the song. To bust a move now means to do something other than standing by, holding on, or waiting. That’s why it’s fell into the morning stream. I was chatting with myself about where I was on a project and then announced, “Time to bust a move.”

Stay positive, test negative, wear a mask as needed, and get the jabs. Besides that, when you feel like you may COVID-19 because of your symptoms, isolate and get yourself tested. Stop the spread and treat yourself. You deserve it.

Speaking of deserving it, I think I deserve a cuppa coffee now. Here’s the music. Cheers

Tuesday’s Theme Music

Tuesday is knocking on the door again, announcing, December 7, 2021. After reading about storms and bad weather around the world and what it’s doing to places, I’m just going to note that fog reduces the sun to a weak white porch light this morning. I’ll accept that over what others are doing. Our temperatures remain mild, with lows in the upper thirties and highs in the upper forties. We did hit 51 yesterday. The sun’s official break was at 7:26 AM and sunset will take place at 4:39 PM here in the valley.

Got the 1993 song “Low” by Cracker swimming around the morning mental music stream. It’s an association thing. Yesterday’s song by the Gin Blossoms was “Follow You Down” which features lines that go, “Anywhere you go, I’ll follow you down, I’ll follow you down, but not that far.” Following that took me to down, and so began the song. Funny to me, as the two songs aren’t remotely similar to my hearing.

Stay positive, test negative, wear a mask as needed to keep safe and reduce COVID’s spread, and get the jabs to mitigate COVID’s impact, should it strike you. Now, it’s coffee time. Here’s the music. Cheers

Monday’s Theme Music

Good morning, my fellow human beans. Today is Monday, December 6, 2021. Weather report says it mostly cloudy here. Looking out, I see no blue sky nor sunshine. An unbroken roll of mild gray has been unleashed over the valley. At least it’s not foggy this AM, although I see streaks of fog hugging ravines and foothills. We’re looking for a high of 51 F today. It’s doable. Sunshine did break through yesterday in the early afternoon, burning the fog away. When I stepped to a window to enjoy it, my irises cried out with injury, recoiling from the light and retreating to my head’s darkest recesses. Yeah, it’d been a while since we’d had sun that bold, clear, and bright.

I have a Gin Blossoms song, “Follow You Down” from 1996 on repeat in the morning mental music stream. The cats put it there. Basically, being bored and restless felines, they began following me around yesterday. Wherever I went, they were attendees. “Oh, what are we getting in the pantry?” “Hey, let’s all go to the bathroom, come on!” Sitting at the desk, I had one on the desk, butting my hand (which really increases the difficulty when typing), another on my feet below, and one on the windowsill behind me. They were like, “Everywhere you go, I’ll follow you around.” So you see why the Gin Blossoms song wormed into my consciousness.

Stay positive, test negative, wear thy mask as situationally needed to reduce spread, and get jabs when you can. Think I’ll have some coffee now. Anyone else? No? Okay, then. Here’s the music.

Cheers

Sunday’s Theme Music

Sunny. Yesterday my life was filled with fog.

Guess what we have today? Fog. Again. Yesterday my life was filled with fog. Next day, same weather. It actually cleared yesterday at about 3:30 PM. Then the fog rolled back in at 4 PM. By sunset, we were sitting in porridge. It reminds me of my years in central Germany, when we’d often have dreary days.

Yeah, me, always complaining about the weather. Too hot, too smoky, too foggy.

Sunrise kicked in at 7:24 AM. Sunset is due at 4:39 PM. High is expected to be 51. But — to continue my weather complaints — we’ve yet to hit any high that they said we would in the past five days. They also say it will be sunny today. Paint me a skeptic.

A Pink Floyd song, “On the Turning Away” (1989) occupies the mental music stream. Don’t know how it fits but it’s associated with dream remnants. Not enough of that dream is remembered to call out details. Bummer. But a good song, about how right-wing governments and people turn away from those in need, from a great group. Somehow apropos for this time, when GOP lead legislatures and states are doing their best to undermine social justice, voting rights, and abortion rights.

Stay positive, test negative, wear a mask as needed, and get the vax and boost when you can. Here’s my coffee, and the music. Cheers

Saturday’s Theme Music

Good day, Saturheads. Today is December 4, 2021. Happy birthday to you, if it’s your birthday. Hope it’s the best one yet.

Day broke with a foggy layer. Appears to be yesterday’s fog, as the day decided not to change its weather, but to just use yesterday’s weather. “It was barely used yesterday,” the day was quoted on the net (so you know it must be true). “It just hung in the sky all day. Still looked brand new. So, what the cloud? I figured I’d economize, use it again. You have any idea how much it costs to put up that much new fog every day?”

Yesterday’s highs were never achieved as fog shut down the sun’s heat. We mustered 50, I think. Expect the same today. Currently 41 F six hours after starting at 39 when the sun stumbled in at 7:23 AM. I bout it will be much warmer by the time the sun bids adieu at 4:39 later this afternoon, just three hours from now.

Been out shopping. Visited Scoffco as Costco is now labeled for the preponderance of mask scoffers. They’re not worried about catching nor spreading no stinkin’ COVID. That location was the worse of the seven stores we visited this morning. Seven? Yes. My wife has begun collecting the props for her book club’s annual holiday party. (They are the Ladies #1 Book Club.) We were on a quest for napkins, marshmallows, and specific hot chocolate, but also did personal grocery shopping. I am the official driver and part-time advisor. “Will this work, do you think?” she asks, holding something up. “Maybe,” I sagely reply, peering at it.

Being with my wife on her shopping project, my mind adopted Lauv’s song, “I Like Me Better” (2017). She no doubt makes me a better person. Her presence helps me consider issues from the female side, and she likes challenging norms and sexism. My thinking has grudgingly expanded under her tutelage. It’s only taken five decades. That’s how long we’ve been together as friends, steadies, lovers, and spouses.

Stay positive, test negative, wear a mask as needed — don’t be a Scoffco’er — and get the vax and booster when you can. Time for a coffee with a muffin, so excuse me. Back later.

Cheers

Friday’s Theme Music

Got my Friday face on, don’t need much more, gonna go party, yeah, lookin’ to score. Gonna stay up till the sun breaks the sky, and when I tell you all about it, I’ll lie and lie.

Yes, it’s December’s first Friday, which comes on a third this year. Traditionally, the first Friday of December is celebrated by making lists and then checking them twice. Shopping, chores, whatever, the list can be about anything. The point is to make them so you can cross them off on December 21. Don’t know how that tradition began.

Daybreak came at 7:22 AM and nightfall is expected to begin at 4:39 PM. It’s foggy today. Present temperature is a foggy 39 degrees F. Forecasters anticipate the fog breaking enough for us to see some sunshine and a high temperature in the low fifties. It was managed yesterday, with a pleasant afternoon making the scene. All reminds me of living in Half Moon Bay, California. Fog was our norm for much of the year. But being there, we had the ocean’s inputs to our senses, offsetting the fog’s depressing tendencies.

Got Finger Eleven’s song, “One Thing” from 2003 residing in my morning mental music stream. Arrived due to writing thinking and dueling with the muse. At a pivotal scene, thinking, if I can sort out this one thing. That reminded my neurons that this song was loaded into the gray vault, and the mental Alexa released it to the stream. Here are the actual lyrics.

If I sorted it out
If I knew all about this one thing
Wouldn’t that be something

h/t AZLyric.com

How many times have people said to themselves or one another, if we can just sort this out…etc?

Stay positive, test negative, wear a mask as needed, and get the vax and boosters when you can. Also, pick up some coffee for me. Never mind, I need to relieve my rear end anyway. I’ll get it myself.

Here’s the music. Cheers

Thursday’s Theme Music

Mornin’, fellow fogheads. If you’re in my valley, you’re probably a foghead, that is one walking in fog. For it is Thursday, December 2, 2021, and it’s a languid foggy AM. Sunshine is trying to breach the fog wall. It did successfully do so in yesterday’s mid-afternoon. Kind of entrancing right now, with glimmers of sunlight eking through the fog’s western perimeter, above the pine and fir clad mountainside, and a train whistle blowing as a locomotive and its cargo stops traffic on its way north. Temperatures are rolling up through the low forties right now on their way to an expected high in the mid-fifties. All this stagnant, foggy air is expected to last until next week when a new Pacific storm slides in. These temperatures are higher than average, piling more worries up about the mountain snowpacks that feed our water supply throughout the year. Sunrise was at 7:21 AM. Sunset will occur at 4:40 PM. However, we’re in the mountains’ shadow, so it feels like the sun pulls down the night on us earlier than that.

Dreams are also foggy and, prosaic of what I remember of them. All that improbably leads to Boston playing “Peace of Mind” from 1977. I always like those lyrics that demand, “Take a look ahead,” followed by exhortations, “Look ahead,” repeated a few times. Regardless of my frequency of posting about the past or sharing memories, I’m a person who prefers to look ahead. It’s a good theme song as we begin closing down 2021 and start prepping for 2022.

Stay positive, test negative, wear a mask as needed, and get the vax and booster when you’re able. Carpe diem. I’ll start by carpe coffee. Here’s the music. It’s an interesting video of Boston doing the song live in 1979. RIFP, Brad Delp, who committed suicide in 2007, when he was 56. That’s home on vocals, giving his all.

Cheers

Wednesday’s Theme Music

Change the page. December has arrived. Today is Wednesday, the first. Commence the countdown to the new year.

May be a new month but we began it the same way as the end of last month, with sunshine wearily attempting to poke sunlight through clouds and fog. Gray and silver drape the trees. All the deciduous have dumped their leaves. Naked branches are the new norm, except for the pines and firs.

Temperature is 40 degrees F with expectations that we’ll see 62. Sure. Sunset will come at 4:40 PM while sunrise’s feeble start was at 7:20 AM. A day without sunshine is a dreary spectacle.

Today’s music popped into the morning mental music stream after a political conversation with friends yesterday. Someone made the comment, “That’ll be the day,” which prompted the ol’ mental Alexa to say, “Playing That’ll Be the Day by Linda Ronstadt from 1976.” Why Alexa went with that cover instead of the Buddy Holly edition is outside of my gray matter’s ken. Anyway, it’s on a loop in my head so I’m putting it out there to loop into others’ heads.

Stay positive, test negative, wear a mask as needed, and get the vax and booster when you can. You know what I mean. Got my coffee, French Roast, untouched by sugar, cream, or milk, but with a splash of cinnamon. Here we go, December. Cheers

Tuesday’s Theme Music

Sunshine glittered off the trees and cracked through the windows at 7:19 AM on this November 30, 2021 morning. Two hours later, fog stole the light and cast shadows across hopes for a bright, sunny day. The temperature was 51 F; now it’s 45. The expected high is 62 so we’re expecting change to come.

Hello, fellow Earthfarers. Today is Tuesday, the final day of the eleventh month of the year. 2021 is drawing down. Yet, it will all go on with a new set of numbers and labels. Same day, different year.

I have Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song” from 1980 occupying the morning mental music stream. This is directly dream related. As I noodled through recalling my dreams, one about change stood out. From that, I came to think of this song. I remember hearing it for the first while I was at home listening to an offbeat FM rock station in San Antonio, TX. That station played many tunes that didn’t find regular airplay on other stations. The song resonated with me, although I, a white male in America, have always had it pretty good. I looked up the lyrics later.

Stay positive, test negative, wear a mask as needed, and get some jabs. Here’s the song, a reflective tune for a fog-swathed morning. Wait…is that sunshine?

Not holding my breath. Just sipping my coffee. Cheers
