Friday’s Theme Music

Time is suddenly slowed for me. Like I was on Chronos Highway, speeding along, making, um, good time, when suddenly everything slowed down. Wonder how many others are feeling it?

Today is Friday, May 20, 2022. Sunrise spidered in through leafy boughs at 5:45 this morning. Sol will skedaddle from these environs at 8:30 PM.

It’s a clear sky, empty of clouds, but haziness hovers on the western horizon. Reflecting that clear sky, temperatures dropped to 35 F last night and sit at 42 now. We expect a high of 68 F. The cats are out digging the sunshine. I told them, “Don’t you put holes in the sunshine.” They were like WTF you talkin’ ’bout?

The neurons put nothing into the morning mental music stream. First no dreams are remembered, and then the neurons abandon their musical motif. Interesting Friday. Well, I lie a bit. The neurons did have “Time Is On My Side” sliding around the music stream for about seventeen seconds. I sat and wondered, what song should I put out there today? As I did, I came across a video of Tears for Fear playing “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” in 2022. With the primary elections in full swing in the U.S., Ukraine trying to fend off Russia, Putin threatening Finland and Sweden, Turkey saying “Nyet” to NATO, the GOP trying to undo established precedent and foster election corruption, and billionaires attempting to become trillionaires, I thought, “Why that’s a perfect song for this age and time, innit?”

Sure, the neurons said, yawning. Go for it. Which I did.

Regardless of the little neurons’ mood, I’m going for coffee. Care to come? Here’s the music while you decide. Cheers

Sunday’s Theme Music

Today is Sunday, January 17, 2021. Four percent of the new year has passed. Sunrise in Ashland was at 7:39 AM and sunset is expected at 5:04 PM. We creep toward the longest day of the year. The cats have been outside and report that although the temperature is 44, the sunshine is endless and warm to the fur.

Our 1985 Mazda RX-7 was featured in my dream. My wife and I bought it new when we returned to the U.S. after serving four years on Okinawa. With that in mind, I trawled memories for a song that might work today. I came up with Tears for Fear, “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”. Yes, a lot of people want to rule it for various reasons. I’m not sure I want to rule anything.

Sometimes, when I think of this song, I substitute words. Recurring themes are, “Everybody wants to pet the floof.” Especially so if an animal is around. I’ve also been known to sing, “Everybody wants a glass of beer.” Wine and cake have been subbed there on occasion. Another variant is “Everybody wants a piece of cake.” It’s a versatile song.

The weather is a quick-change artist. I sat to type and lo, the sun has skidded behind full-sky cloud covers. Showers dampened the street and walks, and a wind has launched.

Checked our toilet paper supplies this morning. Sixty rolls on hand. There are two of us. We average eight days per roll per bathroom, so we are, relatively, rolling in TP.

Stay positive, test negative, and eat healthy. Oh, and wear a mask. Cheers

Tuesday’s Theme Music

A good friend of mine used to proclaim Tears for Fear’s “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” as the BEST SONG EVER. I’m always hesitant to declare a song BSE. Music speaks to moods and eras of life for me, just as books and movies do. What any of them depends upon how they fit into my life at the time. I can still use to them stream memories and experiences, though.

I haven’t seen this good friend in over twenty years. He changed, I changed, and we were in the military, and assignments changed. But, hearing this song, there’s his grinning face as he demands, “Turn it up.”

Thinking back on my life, I’m amazed how many songs are attached to moments with specific people.

Today’s Theme Music

This song, from 1985, was a friend’s favorite. He was part of our military ‘circle of singers’, so it was incorporated in the closing part of our parties.

We were stationed at Onizuka Air Station in Sunnyvale, California. We were the people inside the Blue Cube, helping to watch and guard space. I was the Command Post Superintendent during my first few years and lived on Moffett Base Housing (close to Hanger One) not far from many others of my unit. We loved throwing summer parties to celebrate holidays and special events. They included volleyball games and grew big and popular, including people form outside my org.

We tended to end the parties with the circle sing of core members. We were just in a circle belting out a song at the top of our lungs as the stereo blasted away.

For one memorial Labor Day celebration, all the neighbors had attended, eaten, played and partied, so noise wasn’t a problem…in the immediate area. But the party became quite loud, affecting people a few streets over. They called the security police to complain, and those esteemed officers came to our door. Fortunately, the commander of the SP squadron, along with the acting base commander, were in attendance at our party, participating in our circle of song. We turned the music down and behaved ourselves and all were happy.

We had great times in those days.
