Friday’s Wandering Thought

He read in a paper, “…they were laying down on their stomach.” He frequently reads sentences like that and wonders, is down necessary? Could they be laying up or in another way? It seems redundant.

Like that phrase so constantly heard, “I was thinking in my head.” Like, where else do you think? Explain.

The Writing Moment

As an aspiring fiction writer, his typing, spelling, grammar, and punctuation skills were terrible. His output would be prodigious if he could improve those.

Saturday’s Wandering Thought

Websites seemed to be growing worse. Almost since the inception of the web, there was clickbait, slugs, ledes, and headlines to invite surfers to click and browse. Too many of these were outright misleading, trying to sensationalize political divisions and celebrity behavior.

Grammar declines. Punctuation mistakes, yes, and typos, which can happen, but some sentences are read several times before the fact is accepted that the sentence is I&I – incomplete and incoherent.

Now, bad links are blooming. Click on a link and it takes you to the wrong place. Is hijacking back? It seems like just weak execution. Whatever it is, it’s another modern, first-world annoyance.

Don’t get him started on the pathetic search results which are often returned.

Monday’s Wandering Thought

He finished reading an article on a Tampa Bay news site. At the end of the article was something he’d never before seen: a button to report typos.

Impressed, he nodded. Many sites would benefit from such a button. They could also use a button to report grammar and punctuation errors.

Hell, his own modest site would do with those buttons.
