Sunday’s Theme Music

Sunday is living up to its name. The sky is asking, “What’s a cloud?” None are on the roster. Sunshine rules. Our overnight low of 68 F was the day’s high a little more than a week ago. It’s now 75 F. After seeing a C note yesterday, expectations are that we’ll be at 102 F today.

It’s June 26, 2022. Get your June tasks done, for only five June days remain. Hump day, the middle of the year, is almost over.

The sun came over the horizon at 5:46 this morning and will go metaphorically underground at 8:51 PM.

The Neurons are singing “Hold the Line” by Toto from 1978. The Neurons were again foolin’ with me. I was writing in my head after the formal session finished, and like a line which emerged. So I told myself, “Hold onto that line while I get paper and pen and write it down.” Yeah, The Neurons answered, “Playing ‘Hold the Line’.” I was like, what, no, but it was too late. The strains were already live in the stream.

Stay positive, test negative, wear a mask as need be, etc. I hear a coffee maker singing the morning song. Hot coffee on a day like this? You betcha! Here’s the tune. Cheers

Friday’s Theme Music

I’m afraid today’s music is another one that just snuck into the stream and refuses to depart. I don’t know why it came in – I was cleaning the kitchen at the time and planning my day.

“Rosanna” by Toto isn’t a bad song at all. I got to know it and all of Toto IV (1982) intimately. I was stationed at Kadena Air Base on Okinawa, Japan, at the time. My best bud, Jeff, loved the Toto IV album. The harmonies enthralled him. We used to go camping up at Okuma, where the military had a recreation area, and Toto IV with “Rosanna” was always played a few times a day.

Good ol’ Jeff. Fun, smart guy. Haven’t heard from or about him in decades.

Monday’s Theme Music

Redlegagenda posted this song this morning, so I credit them with reminding me of this Weezer classic. I enjoy Weezer, catching their remake of the Toto classic, “Africa”, and I’ve posted several of their songs as my choice of theme music before. This is a first for “Hash Pipe”.

But since Weezer covered “Africa”, I went with Toto’s live cover of “Hash Pipe”. Got to admit, I like Weezer’s “Hash Pipe” better (because of the more rocking guitars and Cuomo’s high-voiced singing), but this is still fun.

Today’s Theme Music

One of my most enjoyable experiences while in the military came during my assignment to Okinawa. I was stationed at Kadena Air Base.

I became good friends with Jeff, who arrived almost at the same time. We were in command and control. Both assigned to the Military Airlift Command for the first time, Jeff had come out of the Strategic Air Command, probably the most intense Air Force command regarding command and control, because they were a large part of the nuclear deterrent triad. So Jeff thought MAC was pretty laid back. Compared to SAC, it was.

Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) ran facilities at Okuma Beach for the military to use. Jeff had two young boys. He would go camping. I would tag along. Sometimes others would go with us. It was great, grilling all weekend, tossing around baseballs, swimming, a wonderfully relaxing time. My wife didn’t like camping, so she didn’t go, declaring, “My idea of roughing it is no mints on the pillows.” The one time she did go, a typhoon was moving in, blowing our tent over while we tried to sleep.

Situated where it was on the island in the East China Sea, Okuma suffered little light pollution. It was great to put down a blanket, look up at the clear, bright stars, listen to the surf and think.

Our music of the time was dominated by Toto IV, an usual rock album that did very well. One frequently planned song was ‘Africa’.

Here it is.
