His four sisters all call their mother ‘mummy’. Not mommy, but mummy. They have done so their entire lives. He calls her mom.

He wonders what drives the difference. His sisters’ children call his sisters mom, mommy, or mother. Their grandchildren call his sisters grandma. None of them refer to their moms as mummy.

Synofloof

Synofloof (floofinition) – Other terms for an animal’s species, usually playing off their behavior or appearance.

In use: “Jamaal intoned, “Here comes Lord Floof,” indicating the little confident black kitten that walked into the room, using the synofloof that meant the kitten, named Kap, was already king of the house. Indeed, the dogs were already drawing back to make way for the fierce little feline.”

Flooftronym

Flooftronym (floofinition) – A new term adopted to distinguish between different an old and new animal.

In use: “When they had only one cat, they just asked, “Where’s the cat?” With a new cat, they required a flooftronym, referencing the new cat as the new guy, the big guy, or the big cat, while their original cat was referred to as the queen, her floofship, or the little one.”
