Wednesday’s Wandering Thoughts

A woman and a young boy stood near me in the coffee shop. Appearing to be about ten years old, he was occupied with a phone.

Smiling, the woman asked him, “Are you playing Pokemon?”

The boy briskly nodded.

She patted his shoulder. “Your mother used to love to play Pokemon. She played all the time.”

The kid looked up at her like she’d changed into a flying creature.

I laughed to myself, kind of amazed to think that children who used to play Pokemon now have children playing Pokemon. It’s been around that long.

But it’s the thing really to think of your children having children or grandchildren. Just another measurement of how life advances.

Thursday’s Wandering Thoughts

Temperature is such a funny animal. 72 degrees inside in the winter and we sigh with comfort. So warm! How nice.

72 F inside in the summer — “Brrr, it feels a little chilly,” my wife complains.

Looking askance, I smile and move, catlike to a pool of sunshine streaming in through the window.

Satyrdaz Wandering Thoughts

While going to the coffee shop, I often pass a cemetery. Not surprising as Ashland has three.

This one is the original. Located just off East Main Street, it sits beside some of the town’s oldest neighborhoods, including the Railroad District.

I often glance at the cemetery while driving by, looking for deer. Deer often visit the cemetery, grazing and digesting between grave markers.

A few weeks ago, I noticed teenagers gathering in the cemetery. Once was a curiosity, twice was a surprise, three times is a trend. They did this for several weeks, regardless of sunshine, freezing fall, or rain and drizzle.

We’re not addressing a few teens; usually ten to eighteen gather, typically a few minutes after eleven AM. I wonder, what’s going on there, and at what grave are they gathering?

Here’s the kicker, though. School is out for the winter break. The children are not gathering. Instead, that same gravestone was host to five deer. I kid you not.

I really need to stop by and see the name on that grave.

Sundaz Wandering Thoughts

A man and his companion sat down with their dogs on the coffee house porch. Both people had pastries which they sat down on the table. The dog immediately went for that.

“No, Curry,” the man said, lightly touching the dog. “Come on. Make good decisions.”

I laughed to myself. I bet the dog thought that going for the food was a good decision.

In The Coffee Shop

The barista called out, “Regular coffee for here.”

I swear that all conversation stopped. Everyone stared, surprise mingling with wonder on their expressions. Then came a slow scan. What was that drink? Regular coffee? What is ‘regular coffee’? Who is it for?

After a few minutes, a person busily scarfing up a wedge of mushrooms and spinach quiche rushed the counter. “Is this mine?” she called as she put her hand out.

“Yes,” the barista agreed. The woman seized the cup and slurped up coffee, seemingly oblivious to the wonder going on around her.
