Today’s Theme Music

Oh, Yes! Like many rock bands, Yes’ membership has changed a few times. For me, in high school in the early seventies, they were part of the core music line up in art class, as our hip teacher was convinced we would be permitted to play cassette tapes on a portable player (we didn’t call them boom boxes or ghetto blasters in those days) as part of the creativity cycle. Yes was rotated in and out with BTO, the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, ZZ Top, Eric Clapton, Deep Purple as we painted and drew.

But today’s song is from their comeback. Having disbanded, they re-formed in 1983. (You know, whenever I write words like that, I can’t help but think of Spinal Top, the fake rock group in the center of the mocumentary, ‘This Is Spinal Tap’. ) When ‘90125’ was released in 1983, it was added to the listening library on Okinawa alongside Boston, the Rolling Stones, ZZ Top, Eric Clapton…hmmm….

Here is one of the most known songs from Yes, ‘Owner of a Lonely Heart’. As they say, the owner of a lonely heart is much better than the owner of a broken heart. Rock lyrics…only the Kinks worked hard on language. Whatever: “You’ve to to want to succeed.”

Crank it.

Today’s Theme Music

I think today’s music may be a repeat. I don’t know. I don’t track them.

‘Hallelujah’ by Leonard Cohen is one of my favorite songs. It haunts me for a few days whenever I hear it, echoing choruses and notes that deliver stillness and a smile. The original production is moving, and there are many great covers, but the reason why it’s with me again is because of a new cover. Pentatonix and their A Cappela rendering is all over Facebook. That’s where I heard it yesterday. Now I share it with you today.

A series of dreams battered me like a line of thunderstorms. Winds blowing strong and steady, whistling around windows and eaves, brought up tornado memories. Only been in two or three but they have a memorable sound.

Songs were featured in my dreams but after hearing the wind and rain, I went with ‘Stormy Monday’. Many great covers of this T-Bone Walker song are out there, but I went with a sentimental favorite. Here is the Allman Brothers Band performing ‘Stormy Monday’ from their album, ‘At Fillmore East’.  Crank it up.

Getting ready to write? Or do anything else? Sometimes you need your mojo.

Time to get that mojo working. Maybe Muddy Waters can help. Sing along with the chorus – “Got my mojo working.” Feel free to move around and dance.

Get your mojo working. Go write, edit, whatever, create a better life.

A character is pushing for this music. She screwed up. They accused her of trying to be a hero, which is wrong, which is not what it was about at all. They don’t care. They set the course of their perceptions long before her actions.

Now she needs a hero. So many offerings out there, musically, but went with David Bowie’s ‘Heroes’. Many renditions are available and Bowie always delivered an excellent show. I chose the recording of his Live Aid performance from 1985.

A depressing dream has pillaged my enthusiasm and burned my energy. Rising to face the tedium of repeating yesterday’s activities just like I did yesterday and on through a hall mirroring hundreds of yesterdays and tomorrows, I thought, “Yeah, you go back, Jack, do it again.”

So here it is, another throwback. Steely Dan’s ‘Do It Again’.

Stevie Nicks has lived an interesting life and presented memorable music. I have many favorites out of her catalogue. Her music usually has a story behind its creation.

The story behind this one is what makes it one of my favorites. Newly married, she and her husband were driving somewhere when Prince’s ‘Little Red Corvette’ came on. Stevie really enjoyed it. Humming it, she began coming up with her own song and actually went into the studio and did a demo that night, even though this was her honeymoon. Then she called Prince and told him about the song and how his song inspired it. He came over and helped her finish it.

That story of inspiration firing her creativity resonates with me. The final touch is Prince’s unattributed (on the album) assistance. Here’s ‘Stand Back’.

We’re split on so many issues these days. It’s always been so, I think – remember slavery? Our history is full of repression, divisions, social rifts and strife. The establishment remains entrenched and opaque. Callow politicians and business leaders too often lie to us to promote private agendas, and those agendas are usually about taking care of themselves to the detriment of our nation and its citizens. It’s difficult to read the news and not become frustrated and depressed.

In memory of our history and all that’s going on now and forever, I offer something a little lighter that demonstrates a small sliver of some of the differences that have always existed. Webizens, here is ‘Uneasy Rider’ by Charlie Daniels, 1973.

I have Sirius XM in my car. I don’t pay for it. It came with six months free when I bought the car almost two years ago. They want me to pay for it, so they send me deals to entice me to return. The deal is usually two free weeks but they often leave it on.

When I have the deal, I take advantage. That changes my listening patterns. My wife and I enjoy the blues, so we put it on BB King’s Bluesville and leave it there for days.

I end up missing the current music. One of the more recent hits I enjoy is The Weeknd’s ‘In the Night’. It has something of a Michael Jackson sound to it from one of his periods.

Since it’s the weekend, here it The Weeknd, in the morning, with ‘In the Night’.

Alright, let’s start the week with a little attitude.

Cee Lo Green had a hit with ‘Forget You’.  Clever words and a throwback Motown sound infuses the song with a get up and move beat, but he had another version. A clever young person, Anna, made it a jewel. In her comment when she uploaded it to Youtube, Anna wrote,

“My name is Anna and this is my final for a college level sign language class. I am not deaf and still learning sign language and encourage others to learn sign language as well! Thank you so much for all the love”

Sometimes the song’s attitude is just the energy needed to leap out of a funk.

I love it, myself.
