Friday’s Theme Music

It’s 1979. Disco, technopop and technorock, progressive stuff which veers away from heavy guitars, proliferates. As a young man out in the world, I just went with the flow, primarily because, wife. On my own, my preferences veered toward Pink Floyd and The Wall, but it doesn’t have one good dance tune on it, does i?

One of the songs of that era bounced to mind this morning after a bleak review of the news. “Good Times” by Chic was all about the little things that constitute good times – making a rent payment, having a friend. It also savagely mocks the same theme, mentioning keeping your head above water and surviving, yeah, that’s good times.

Sounds perfect for 2020, doesn’t it? Survived the pandemic, good times. Made it through the wildfires and hurricanes, good times. Survived unemployment and hunger, good times.

Or, as the song lyrics originally said:

Monday’s Theme Music

“Geez, look at the friggin’ numbers, rising and rising, when will it end?”

“My god, did you read the news?”

“Look at those people! None of them wearing a mask, or gloves, and they’re not six feet apart!”

Such responses to things led to today’s song. Blasting out of 1978 right into today, it’s Chic with “Le Freak”. You can sing along with the refrain, “Ahhh, freak out!”

 

Yeah, read, think, talk, wonder, watch, and freak out. Perfect for today. Music, with a slice of humor and nostalgia.

Thursday’s Theme Music

In one of those serendipity moments that I enjoy, I’d started streaming “Le Freak” by Chic yesterday. This was a disco era hit from 1978. It was all washing across the airwaves, so it washed into my brain.

Why was I singing along to the stream in my mind yesterday? Don’t knoaw. But reading this day in history, Studio 54 opened back in 1977. The place was a curiosity. Partiers and the famous and wealthy loved it, but it triggered a meh response in me.

Here is where the serendipity arrives. Chic band members wrote the song “Le Freak” when one of their members (Niles Rodgers) was turned away.

Here’s to the disco era. Let’s freak out!
