Wednesday’s Theme Music

Today’s song, “Happy” by Pharrell Williams, is a repeat. “Happy” was a theme song back in 2016 on the final Friday before our national elections. D.J.T.’s bizarre campaign was about to end, alleviating us of the lies and B.S. he constantly spouted.

Oh, if we only knew.

I don’t know why I’m streaming it today. It’s just in my head. I was surprised when it didn’t win an Academy Award. I shouldn’t have been surprised, as I’m not good at such predictions.

Anyway, once again, a song must be shared to purge it from my stream. As songs go, a worst one could be found.

Monday’s Theme Music

Blame today’s theme music on a cat.

I was administering a dose of hairball malt. Being of a loving, but perverse and distrustful nature, the cat fought, and the malt ended up on his paw. He tried shaking it off. I told him, “Lick it off, lick it off.”

From that moment, Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” mindjacked me. The beauty of the song is its malleability. All manner of phrases can be inserted and employed for the song’s lyrics. For instance, when you’re driving and encounter a rude driver, you can sing, “That driver is a dick, dick, dick, dick, flip him off, flip him off.”

Or you can just play with the words. “Bakers gonna bake, bake, bake, and the bandage is gonna stay, stay, stay, rip it off, rip it off.”

From my head to yours, from 2014.

Tuesday’s Theme Music

This was one of those who and what situations.

I heard the lyrics, “Looking for the answers in the pouring rain.” Whenever I heard the song on the radio, I tried listening for more lyrics and the name of the song and group. They used to give the song title and performers’ name on the radio; not so much, anymore. But hearing those lyrics, I did an Internet search. First I thought the song was called “Cage the Elephant.” That didn’t make sense. I didn’t hear elephants mentioned in the song. What was I missing?

Oh, Cage the Elephant is the musical group’s name. That makes more sense, right? The song turned out to be “Cigarette Daydreams.”

I was surprised by how long Cage the Elephant had been around, so I went retro, searching out their music. Meanwhile, here’s “Cigarette Daydreams.” I do like these lyrics:

You can drive all night
Looking for the answers in the pouring rain
You wanna find peace of mind
Looking for the answer

Today’s Theme Music

Today’s choice isn’t a favorite but I hear it in the radio and it’s stuck to the flypaper of my mind. It also lends itself well to singing to the cats.

The song is ‘Shut Up and Dance’ by Walk the Moon. Some lines go, “This woman is my destiny, she said, shut up and dance with me.”

Applying that to cat life is easy. “This kitty is my destiny. He meowed, shut up and come feed me.”

He does other things. He purrs, shut up and pet me. Shut up and let me out. You know, things that cats do.

Yeah. I might be a little crazy. Bring me more coffee.

The Edge of Tomorrow

My wife had her book club last night. This is important in the sequence of events. With her present, I would not have watched ‘The Edge of Tomorrow’. It stars Tom Cruise.

She does not like Tom Cruise.

Tom Cruise is, meh, to me. His acting doesn’t wow me but that means I set my expectations low. When they’re exceeded, I’m pleased. Most of his roles don’t require deep emotions. They’re generally action oriented. He’s required to show bewilderment, determination, and fearless resolve. He handles that fine.

I wanted to see ‘The Edge of Tomorrow’ because it’s a science-fiction film. Besides black humor, British humor, and drama, I enjoy science-fiction the best. It’s great if all of it can be combined in one film. I acknowledge, too, that I’m being redundant, calling out black humor and British humor as though they’re different. Well, they are; some British humor is silly humor.

I never read the original novel the movie was based on (‘All You Need is Kill’). I knew, from exposure, the general premise that Tom, as Major Cage, was trapped into repeating the same day again and again, and it was during a war with alien invaders. I winced when I saw his name was Cage and he was essentially caged by events, but that’s a personal problem for me. I knew, too, that he becomes a better soldier and saves the world through his groundhog day military life. I didn’t know the details.

I won’t share any more, though, so as not to give away further plot. I enjoyed the movie more than anticipated. It had fewer holes that I expected, and I didn’t find myself re-casting it. I particularly enjoyed Tom’s betrayal of Cage in the movie’s opening twenty minutes, as his paradigms are shifted for him.

Anyway, fun film, not too gritty or gory, not really violent as it’s all CGI. It’s worthwhile watching with a glass of wine when your spouse is out.
