Sunday’s Theme Music

Woo-hoo. Welcome to Sunday, September 12, 2021, National Video Games Day! Yes, today is set aside as a day of observance and remembrance to the video games we loved and played. Yeah. A popular social media device is to ask you what your favorite video game was a child. I think mine was Etch-A-Sketch. Does that qualify? I do remember when Pong came out and we all played it for about twenty minutes. Ah, the seventies. What a period for video games.

Sunrise was 6:44 AM today. Sunrise cometh at 7:27 PM as daylight hours accordion down. AQI is moderate, mid seventies, and the high today will be in the low 80s F here in Ashland, southern Oregon.

I’ve already dated myself with my video game recollections. So, nothing to lose. I awoke with “25 or 6 to4” by the Chicago Transit Authority playing in the mental music stream. Its emergence for here and now isn’t clear. What is clear is that it’s stuck and must be shared to be removed. Chicago later dropped the last two words of its name. Its style changed, too. But, that’s how it goes with music.

So here it is, from pre-Internet, pre-worldwide web, pre-video games. Why I listened to this song on vinyl. Then tape. Now I listen to it on digits. Remember, stay positive, test negative, wear a mask, and get the vax. Now go play a video game while I get coffee. Cheers

Monday’s Theme Music

The changing season was seen in today’s sunrise at 6:34 AM. The light angled in a different angle. Struck another part of the wall. Was strong and fresh — we’re relatively smoke-free this morning, again, knock on wood — and warm but not hot. A low moved in overnight, dropping temperatures. Today’s high will be in the seventies before the sun bows out at 7:48 PM. Last night’s low was in the upper fifties. The cooler, fresher air is as welcomed as returning heroes.

Today is Monday, August 30, 2021. A dream about a musician friend is on my mind. He played with Janis so a Janis song is in order. He didn’t play on this song, though. Today’s choice is “Mercedes Benz” from 1970, the last song she recorded.

Stay positive. Test negative. Wear a mask as needed. Get the vax. Here’s the music. Cheers

Sunday’s Theme Music

Welcome to the day before Monday, a.k.a., Sunday. This is also known to some as the day before tomorrow, the day after yesterday, and the day after Saturday. Some call it the week’s beginning. Others refer to it as the end of the weekend. It is also July 18, 2021.

The warm but not blazing summer trend continues. Lows in the upper fifties to low sixties at night bring in fresh cool air. Then the sun, rising at 5:50 and setting at 8:43, will heat us up into the mid nineties. It’s a slow burn, not hitting the 90 mark until the early afternoon. Humidity is low, about 3%.

The Bootleg Fire continues burning 100 miles away. Sixteen fires are burning in the region. The Bootleg dominates, burning through almost 300,000 acres. It’s now 22% contained. It’s a surprise that our air is fresh and clear. Favorable winds. Favorable for us means it sucks for someone else, though. There are no winners in this.

Today’s music is brought to you by Sugarloaf. Their biggest hit, “Green-Eyed Lady”, came out in 1970. It reached number one in Canada, number three in the U.S. Why it’s in my head today, I have no idea. One of those wonders of the mind.

Stay positive, test negative, wear a mask when needed, and get the vax. Here’s the music. Cheers

Monday’s Theme Music

The annual rewind has begun. Not what’s happening, of course. More about revolutions and rotations. The essence, though, is that our daylight hours are beginning their seasonal wane.

Today is Monday, June 28, 2021. Sol’s golden beating began at 5:36 AM, a minute later than yesterday. By 7:45, the thermometer was climbing past 86 degrees F. We expected 110 in our southern Oregon valley today. We’ll get some relief tonight, after the sun moves on at 8:51 PM. The temperatures are expected to drop to 66 then.

I was in a work groove yesterday. Finished wall number three. On to number four this week, completing the great room saga, I mean, painting. Then it’ll be…other rooms.

While painting, I was writing in my head, going through plot lines and character arcs, imagining new scenes, re-thinking old ones, working my way toward a better ending. With this going on — writing in my head and painting the great room (and dealing with the heat) (yeah, okay, I turned on the A/C) — a song from 1970 entered the mental musical rotation stream. By King George, the song is called “Groove Me”. It’s a nice taste of R&B. I enjoyed the backstory of how this song came to be. King George worked in a factory a few feet from a young woman. They saw each other every day, but he was too shy to say anything. He finally wrote this song as a poem to give her. But he never saw her again.

Stay positive, test neggy, wear a mask when needed, and get the vax. Thanks. Here’s the music.

Thursday’s Theme Music

The rain is calling, the coffee is shining, and the sun is falling.

Wait; redo.

Rain falling – sun shining – coffee calling. Okay.

We’ve landed on Thursday, March 18, 2021, for those who are scoring at home. Sol’s appearance was at 7:18 AM while his exit is expected at 7:21 PM here in southern Oregon. Showers are falling, the sun is shining, and the temperature is 43 degrees F according to the thingy hanging on my house.

Having to do with dreams, a 1970 song by Van Morrison called “Domino”. The song’s opening lyrics came at me after I muddled through dream thoughts.

Don’t wannna discuss it
Think it’s time for a change
You may get disgusted
Start thinkin’ that I’m strange

In that case I’ll go underground
Get some heavy rest
Never have to worry
About what is worst or what is best

In the short space required to write this, clouds and rain have overcome the sunshine, tempering hopes for a warm, pleasant spring day. Good writing, reading, drinking coffee day, though, if you have the protection and the means.

Stay positive, test negative, wear a mask, and get the vax.

Cheers

Monday’s Theme Music

I was watching Vera late last night. Second or third time through it, so the plot twists aren’t surprising. Always love that character as brought to the screen by Brenda Blethyn, and the production team. They mentioned the Romany on the show. My mind barked, gypsies. Cher immediately sang, “Gypsies, tramps, and thieves,” and was gone, making way for “Gypsy Woman”.

“Gypsy Woman” was a 1970 hit song for Brian Hyland. Had to look that up (thanks, Wikipedia!). This was another song for which I knew words and melodies (they’re simple and easy to learn, fitting my learning style) but knew nothing about the song or artist. I remember at the time of its release that I already knew the song, but it sounded different, which puzzled the heck out of young me. Later I discovered it’d been released almost ten before by the Impressions, who had a hit with it. Ah hah!

What I didn’t learn until now was that Curtis Mayfield wrote the song. Here it is for your listening pleasure. Be positive, test negative, wear a mask, and vaccinate. Cheers

Tuesday’s Theme Music

Today’s song comes as a reflection on 2020 and its events. As I cogitated about what was and wasn’t, and what might be, I thought of how mojo rises and falls. What will the mojo be like in 2021?

All that thinking led me to a Cat Stevens song, “Wild World” (1970). I was fourteen when I heard the song. His singing tone spoke to me as it did a significant swath of my generation.

“But if you want to leave, take good care. I hope you have a lot of nice things to wear. But then a lot of nice turns bad out there.”

Yeah, you never know how things will turn. You can predict and plan, expect, hope, and pray. It often turns without warning, spurred by a sudden wind, a sharp word, a surprise pain, a shy glance, a quick smile, a brief hug. For want of a nail…

Have a good day. Stay positive, test negative, and wear a mask, please.

Saturday’s Theme Music

I’m on my knees typing. The cats have secured the chairs for their use. Aww…don’t they look sweet and comfy? Yes, so I’ll not bother ’em.

A 1970 song entered the conscious musical stream last night and stayed strong this AM, so I’m going with it. The song, “Love the One You’re With” by Stephen Stills, has a particular line that’s hooked in my mind. It’s embedded in the middle of this stanza.

Well there’s a rose in a fisted glove
And the eagle flies with the dove
And if you can’t be with the one you love honey
Love the one you’re with

Yeah, I enjoy the imagery of an eagle flying with a dove. Doesn’t hurt that the song is fast paced and upbeat, and features background singers like Rita Coolidge, John Sebastian, David Crosby, and Graham Nash, right?

Hope you enjoy this blitz from the mists. Please remember, stay positive, test negative, and wear a mask. Cheers

Monday’s Theme Music

I went out to check out Saturn and Jupiter. They’re aligning to ‘form a star’ this year, something they haven’t done in 800 years. (It’s nice to see those kids getting together again…ha, ha, ha.) I’ve had some terrific views of them.

Didn’t work last night. I was out after midnight. Clouds ruined the party. Cold, too. I thought, well, dummy, what’d you expect? It’s December, almost the winter season, and it’s after midnight in northern climes.

That started me singing Eric Clapton’s cover of J.J. Cale’s song, “After Midnight” from 1970. I was inventing other lyrics, singing, for example, “After midnight, I’m gonna stand outside and freeze.” As the cats joined in activities (cats love sky watching, you know), I modified the lyrics for them. “After midnight, we’re going to chase and meow. We’re gonna cause stalking and suspicion, put on running exhibitions, and try to go in and out.” Yeah, it sounded better in my head.

Here’s the music. Please, stay positive, test negative, and wear a mask. Cheers

Friday’s Theme Music

Today’s theme song choice was released in 1970, and is influenced by Mom. I’m thinking of her this week due to holidays and snow. She lives in Pittsburgh, PA, and they had a snowstorm. She told me via FB messenger that they had seven inches on the ground yesterday.

She was a big band and swing fan, but listened to a spectrum of music, with torch songs being her favorite, I think. As pop music expanded and changed, she became more particular about what she listened to as I did the same. She wasn’t a fan of the British invasion or rock. As far as 1970 pop went, she liked Glen Campbell and Neil Diamond.

Today’s song is a Neil Diamond one. Mom loved “Cracklin’ Rosie” and would sing it whenever it came on the car radio. I used to ask her what a ‘Cracklin’ Rosie’ was but she said she didn’t know. When I learned it was wine, I passed that on. Didn’t matter; she still enjoyed the song, although the words now made more sense.

Anyway, that’s today’s theme music. Remember, stay positive, test negative, and wear a mask. Cheers.
